The middleware serves as the gateway to the cloud for all these devices. Its significance is enormous: without powerful middleware, there can be no successful, smoothly running IoT project. Put simply: with many devices, the data to be transmitted is reduced to a minimum. The middleware processes this information again so that the devices function within the network. The result: validly collected data that can be utilized and analyzed.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Middleware Works<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The middleware is an on-premises or cloud-based software. It serves as a central interface between all network-based requests from the frontend and the backend resources, including when linking local applications. The middleware consolidates every interface at a central point. In this way, all requests first reach the middleware, which then distributes these requests to the responsible application. It translates\u2014acting as an interpreter\u2014the various &#8220;languages&#8221; (protocol translation) and thus makes effective data management possible in the first place. Monitoring and maintenance of all devices also run through the middleware as the central interface.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is where the high efficiency of this principle comes into play:<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> On the one hand, a wide variety of cloud interfaces and cloud protocols are addressed, as used in existing cloud environments. The IoT project can thus easily connect to environments without having to build additional infrastructure: &#8220;Hey, we already use system and protocol X, can you transmit the data to us with that?&#8221; &#8220;Of course!&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furthermore, the devices can transmit their data in a resource-optimized manner. This means: complex programming of various interfaces is not necessary on the device side, as the middleware handles this. By using an extremely lean transmission protocol, the transmitted data is reduced to only the truly essential core information\u2014overhead is avoided. The device thus consumes particularly little data volume during mobile transmission. A real advantage in terms of costs and IT sustainability!    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety First!<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire process runs completely securely: the middleware has a VPN-secured direct connection to the respective mobile network providers and thus to the deployed devices. Important to note: these devices can only reach the middleware within the network, no other servers. Conceivable scenarios such as &#8220;man-in-the-middle&#8221; attacks or hijacking a device to forward data to another server are virtually ruled out in this way.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Tasks of the Middleware<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Device Management: Delivery of configurations, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delivery of new firmware: updating the software running on the devices integrated and networked in the project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bidirectional communication with the cloud: data is forwarded to the cloud, commands for the devices are received. The cloud can also initiate changes to the device configuration at the middleware. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protocol Translation: Uniform processing of a wide variety of technical protocols<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integration of different technologies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handling of messages and commands from the cloud to the devices (example Pager F.R.E.D.: forwarding of alarms and changing configuration parameters)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connection of a wide variety of endpoints via corresponding plug-ins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intelligent data distribution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another interesting aspect regarding device configuration: the middleware &#8220;buffers&#8221; or holds back this configuration for some products when the devices are currently offline or in energy-saving mode. The configuration is then delivered when the device comes back online.
