A sensor is\u2014simply explained\u2014a technical component that captures a measured value in its actual state at a suitable measurement position. This data is then forwarded to a data processing system. The sensor thus forms the interface between data processing and the outside world of a complete application system. A sensor is normally part of a control loop. When an actual value deviates too much from a target value, it independently takes action: compensation, alarm, or shutdown. The crucial question is therefore: which sensors do I need for which IoT applications?   \n\n\nThe greatest challenge in selection is always the complexity of the overall system and the sensitivity of the individual sensors: the more measured values that must be processed in a central system, the more demanding and important this step becomes. Because sensors function as interfaces to the outside world, their direct contact with other assemblies, outdoor air, weather, or other physical quantities always contributes to their wear. Therefore, it is essential to keep in mind the necessary monitoring and expected replacement of sensitive components when selecting the appropriate sensors.   \n\n\nParticularly in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) domain, it often depends on the harsh operating environment which sensors are capable of reliably performing their function for years, ideally with minimal maintenance. For production lines and industrial facilities, for example, only industrial-grade, robust sensor designs come into serious consideration. Environmental conditions such as dust, dirt, oil, moisture, and temperature also have a major influence, as does connectivity\u2014that is, the interface to higher-level systems. The connectivity properties of the sensors should not only match the data volume but also the existing system infrastructure.    <\/pre>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Successful IoT and IIoT Projects Through Appropriate Sensors<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right sensor choice in an IoT project always depends on the planned individual application area: sometimes sensors with the lowest possible power consumption are needed to achieve the longest possible service life.
