The digital battery passport is coming – and the deadline is fixed. The legal basis is the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which is the first product-specific regulation to become concrete within the framework of the Digital Product Passport (DPP). From February 18, 2027, affected batteries will require a digital battery passport before they can be placed on the market in the EU.

The following battery categories are affected:

  • Electric vehicle batteries (EV batteries) – traction batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles
  • LV batteries – starter batteries for vehicles and light means of transport (e.g., light electric vehicles, LMT batteries)
  • Industrial batteries – batteries with a capacity over 2 kWh for industrial applications, storage solutions, and stationary systems
